Combined Heat and Power (CHP) or Cogeneration is the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly way of using a fossil or renewable fuel to provide a combined output of heat and electricity. It can also provide cooling through chilled water in a process known as trigeneration.
CHP brings major environmental benefits over separate grid electricity and on-site heat supplies as far more of the available energy in a fuel is used in the generation process. By effectively using the excess heat produced during the combustion process to provide hot water or drive an absorption chiller for air conditioning CHP systems are highly efficient and cut CO2 emissions and energy costs .
